Estate Coffee Holdings Corp. Launches New Business Strategy Aimed at Becoming a Vertically-Integrated, Global Leader in the Specialty Coffee
- February 25, 2010
CALGARY, Alberta, - Estate Coffee Holdings Corp. , today announced their business strategy to become a leader in the multi-billion-dollar global specialty coffee industry. The Company has plans for growth in various coffee producing countries by having an active ownership role through acquisitions and joint ventures at all stages from tree to cup. This vertically-integrated strategy is expected to allow the Company to capture margins from coffee production and purchasing, processing, exporting, roasting, and direct consumer sales. The specialty segment is the most rapidly growing segment of the coffee industry.
The Company currently owns a 20 percent interest in DTS8 Coffee (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., a leading roaster and marketer of specialty coffees. DTS8's coffees are artisan roasted in Shanghai and sold in China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and the United States.
Though traditionally tea drinkers, the Chinese are quickly adopting the same thirst for fine Arabica coffee as experienced in Western culture. Many new shops have sprung up in China in recent years, servicing the changing tastes of China's population of 1.3 billion. It is for this reason that the Company has entered this fast-growing market to capitalize on the limited market saturation when compared to North America and other Western markets.

Brazil Sees Coffee Crop ’Far Lower’ Than Outlook, Minister Says
December 16, 2009
Coffee output in Brazil, the world’s biggest producer, will be “far lower” than the 55 million bags estimated by some market analysts for next year, Agriculture Minister Reinhold Stephanes said.
Above-average rainfall will hinder the ripening of coffee beans next year and may hurt production, Stephanes told reporters in Brasilia today.
The showers in Brazil’s main coffee-producing areas led Safras & Mercado to cut an initial estimate of 55 million bags to about 50 million bags for next year, said Gil Carlos Barabach, a coffee analyst at the Porto Alegre, Brazil-based agriculture research company. Brazil’s coffee output will enter the higher-yielding half of a two-year cycle next year.
“Rains will prevent beans from maturing all at the same time,” Stephanes said. “Harvesting will be more difficult.”
Coffee growers harvested 39.47 million bags of coffee this year, up from a September estimate of 39 million bags, the Agriculture Ministry’s crop-forecasting agency, known as Conab, said today in a statement. The crop dropped from 45.99 million bags last year.
Excess rain and temperatures that were too hot for adequate ripening during the harvest that ended in October also reduced the quality of coffee beans in some areas, Conab said. Coffee has jumped 32 percent this year partly because rain pared output in Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia.
Output of the mild-tasting arabica variety, which represents about three-quarters of Brazil’s coffee harvest, fell to 28.9 million bags from 35.5 million bags last year. Production was higher than the 28.4 million bags forecast in September, Conab said.
Growers of robusta beans harvested 10.6 million bags, down from 10.5 billion bags last year and unchanged from the previous estimate, Conab said.
A bag of coffee weighs 60 kilograms (132 pounds).

Coffee May Decrease Diabetes Risks
December 16, 2009
A new study suggests coffee and tea may decrease the risk of developing diabetes.
U.S. (Wired PRNews.com) A recent study suggests that coffee and tea consumption may decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes for individuals. As reported by HealthDay News, the Australian study found that each cup of coffee consumed was linked to a seven percent risk reduction.
Rachel Huxley, lead author of the study and an associate professor and director of the renal and metabolic division at The George Institute for International Health at the University of Sydney in Australia, is quoted in the report as stating of the findings, There is good evidence that consumption of coffee, including decaffeinated coffee, and tea is independently associated with a reduced risk of developingtype 2 diabetes.

Colombia: Hundreds Of Coffee-Growing Families To Benefit From Agreement With Coffee Chain
November 24, 2009
Four hundred coffee-growing families, victims of violence in Colombia's south western department of Nariño, will be able to sell their coffee in the Starbucks chain thanks to an agreement worth US$600,000 signed between the Colombian coffee exporting company Empresas de Nariño, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and IOM.
The agreement seeks to improve the production conditions for coffee-growing families by linking them to the export coffee value chain through the formation of associations that sell the bean directly to Empresas de Nariño.
The families will receive technical assistance on agricultural good practices, plans for protecting soils and diversifying farms and a system for managing the waste water from coffee production. Coffee drying patios and greenhouses will also be built.
Training on business practices, association awareness, and help to set up coffee marketing associations with follow up and monitoring will be provided in addition by IOM and other entities.
This is the second project developed by Empresas de Nariño, Starbucks and IOM in Nariño. A similar agreement supported by the Dutch Embassy in Colombia was carried out between 2005 and 2007. It benefitted 1,160 coffee- growing families from 10 municipalities in the northern coffee growing area of Nariño.
Nariño is among those areas particularly affected by armed groups and drug traffickers, ranking fifth in the country in terms of numbers of victims of violence, according to Acción Social. It also says nearly 140,500 people have been displaced from the department.
The National Narcotics Department (DNE) claims that 24 per cent of all illicit crops planted in the country are found in Nariño. This is despite fumigation, manual eradication and alternative development programmes being carried out by the government in that area. ---------------------------------------------- |
